A landlord in Canarsie says she's dealing with moldy cabinets and a constant leak, and claims the problem is from her tenant living above her.
The landlord, Ifyama Dublin, says it's been an issue for the past few months.
“I can't even put it into words. It's like you're being suffocated in your own home, and you have to pay all the bills you pay and everything, and you have no comfort, you have no peace," said Dublin.
Dublin says she's had trouble coordinating with the tenant to get inside and fix the leak.
“I have knocked, I have put notes on the door. I have called, I have texted," said Dublin.
Dublin says in September, the tenant let a plumber inside after police and firefighters were called. She says the plumber says the bathroom needs to be gutted to fix the leak, and claims the tenant still isn't cooperating with her to get the work done. Dublin says the mold has given her breathing issues, and also impacted her mother.
“Normally, there’s water here on the floor and I mop it up. She was walking and she slipped. The only reason she didn’t hit her head or her back is because she was able to hold onto the machine here," said Dublin.
News 12 crews tried knocking on the tenant's door, and nobody answered.
A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development tells News 12 the tenant claims there is no issue. They also say an inspection for an unrelated complaint is scheduled this weekend and the team proactively checks for other issues.
Dublin says the tenant has rent assistance, so she filed for the tenant to have an emergency relocation, and the Department of Social Services says they're looking into it. Dublin also says the tenant's lease is up at the end of the month, and she's been informed she can't renew.
