The NYPD says a dispute between romantic partners may have led to a shooting inside a Bushwick apartment early Monday morning.
However, neighbors say ongoing safety issues at the building may have also contributed to the chaos.
Twin brothers Jeffrey and Jacob were asleep when they were jolted awake by gunfire coming from the unit next door around 5 a.m.
“I was very scared,” one of the boys said. “It was multiple times, too, like three gunshots.”
Their father, Jose Avila, said this isn’t the first time he's feared for his children’s safety in the building.
“We’re so scared. My kids don’t want to go out anymore,” he said.
Tenants say the building’s security has long been an issue.
One security camera is broken, and residents say they are finding people sleeping in an unlocked cellar.
Others say intruders have been spotted entering through the roof and a warning sign about a roof intruder has even been posted in common areas.
“If it was just me living here, fine,” said Avila. “But what about my kids?”
Police arrested Angel Lozada, 23, shortly after the shooting.
Court documents say Lozada got into a confrontation with his partner’s ex before firing a shot.
He allegedly hid a small, black bag under the sink and later tossed it out a window and inside, police recovered a gun.
The victim identified Lozada as the shooter and is expected to recover.
“A gun has been inside here. We heard a gunshot. You just can’t do that,” Avila added. “I have young children.”
News 12 reached out to the building’s landlord multiple times but has not received a response.
Meanwhile, residents say they won’t feel safe until stronger security measures are in place.
