A highly anticipated new-age supermarket is no longer coming to Farmingville.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico announced the abrupt change to the plan on social media Thursday and confirmed it with News 12 in an interview today.
He said members of Amazon's economic development team called him last week to tell them they were not moving forward with an Amazon Fresh location calling it an "internal" decision.
"I think the marketplace is just changing," Panico said. "The grocery market is especially competitive."
The facility has been fully constructed since 2023 after the town approved the plans the previous year but it has sat vacant on North Ocean Avenue ever since.
Amazon Fresh has three other locations on the island including one in Suffolk County in East Setauket and two in Nassau County in Plainview and Oceanside.
The announcement drew mixed reactions from residents and people who live nearby.
Some argue the town has too many vacant buildings already.
"There are strip malls down the road that are empty, they're building a new center near the post office," Farmingville resident Bob Wallace said. "You know, we don't need them all."
Others didn't understand the decision and would like someone to take over the facility to help the local economy.
"People need jobs these days," Copiague resident Louie Ferro said. "I don't know why they would get rid of it."
Panico said the town is focused on filling all vacant properties.
"I have no doubt that not only that building but the rest of that commercial center is going to be filled out because county road 83 is the busiest county road in Brookhaven town," he said. "I mean the traffic counts are astronomical."
Panico said Amazon plans to come back to the town in two weeks to discuss an opportunity to take over a different vacant property for a possible distribution center.
It's still unclear who may take over the now-defunct Amazon Fresh facility but Panico said it has already garnered some interest for a similar type of use.
News 12 has reached out to spokespeople for Amazon but has not heard back at this time.
