A boil water advisory is in effect this morning for parts of Central Jersey that's impacting schools, businesses and administrative offices.
Flemington police say this is not a widespread public health emergency. The boil water advisory is precautionary for the Flemington Water Service customers in the borough of Flemington and parts of Raritian Township.
The NJDEP directed the borough to issues a boil water advisory until testing confirms the water is safe after a water main break during the Main Street reconstruction project on Wednesday around 1 p.m. that was fixed within a couple hours.
The borough says the damage may have caused a drop in pressure, potentially allowing contaminants to enter the water.
The guidelines for a boil water advisory is to bring water to rolling boil for at least one minute, then cool before consuming or use bottled water.
The boil water advisory in Flemington won't be lifted today, as the lab testing results take 24 hours to come back. The Director of Public Works says they'll wait for the results tomorrow, and if everything looks good, they'll lift the advisory. But if the results aren't good, they'll do some additional flushing and more testing.
Hunterdon Central High School will have an early dismissal today. Students and staff were told to bring their own water bottles to school.
Hunterdon County offices in Flemington will be working remotely. The County Health Department is working with restaurants to make sure food is handled safely.
The scheduled Main Street Water and Sewer Rehabilitation Project will take about five month to complete. Traffic will be detoured as a result.
