There were two reasons to get a doughnut on Friday. The first is that June 6 is National Donut Day. And the second is that if you got your doughnut at Purple Glaze in Asbury Park, it was for a good cause.
Salvation Army Capt. Nathan Denning says that the Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 in Chicago as a fundraising effort during the Great Depression.
The Salvation Army is teaming up with Purple Glaze, which is donating $1 to every doughnut sold on National Donut Day to the Salvation Army.
Denning says that the donated money will be staying in the community to help benefit Asbury Park.
