Another violent incident at the Jay Street–Metrotech subway station has riders concerned.
Police say a 59-year-old man was punched in the face on the southbound A and C platform just after midnight Thursday. He refused medical help at the scene, and officers say the man who hit him—described as being in his 40s and wearing all black—ran off before police arrived.
The attack comes just days after a deadly assault at the same station. Investigators say 25-year-old David Mazariegos was arrested and charged with murder and robbery after they say he repeatedly punched and kicked 64-year-old Nicola Tanzi Tuesday afternoon. Tanzi was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive.
Commuters told News 12 the violence has them questioning how safe the subway really is.
“I don’t feel safe at all. Even when there’s police there, I know things can still happen—because they’re on their phones, they’re in little groups—things can happen in a split second,” said commuter Annette Lawrence.
Police are still searching for the man involved in this latest assault.
According to NYPD data, transit crime in the area has risen about 23% compared to this time last year.
