Missing campaign signs in West Orange have led to a county investigation.
The investigation stems from a report in the New Jersey Globe saying stolen signs paid for by a local bagel shop owner with Apple AirTags were traced back to mayoral candidate Tammy Williams.
The signs urge voters to reject both Williams and incumbent Mayor Susan McCartney. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says it's investigating, but cannot confirm any additional details.
The signs are from Jarrett Seltzer, who owns Bagels by Jarrett. The township previously fined him for covering the windows at his business back in 2023.
Seltzer tells News 12 that around 50 signs were taken, with some tracked to Williams.
"I put AirTags in them from the start, because I know how dirty this town can get,” Seltzer said. “Around 5 p.m. that day - I was about to go out to dinner - and my sign moved. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my sign because I was going out to dinner. Throughout that entire dinner, we were watching the phone ping. It was jumping around, and at 6:30 pm, it pinged at the address of Councilwoman Tammy Williams. We were like, 'What?'"
News 12 has reached out to both Williams and Mayor McCartney for comment but has not heard back.
