An abandoned home in Dyker Heights that has caught fire six times in the past two years is now set to be demolished following a deadly fire last week.

The FDNY says a 40-year-old woman died in the latest fire, which tore through the home on 67th Street. Officials believe she may have been squatting inside. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, neighbors say they’ve been concerned about the property for years.

“Sometimes my tenant calls me about squatters in the backyard using the water hose,” said Kamrul Shamim, a neighborhood contractor. “I think demolishing it is a good thing.”

A violation notice on the Department of Buildings’ website confirms the home will be taken down, though an official demolition date has not been set.

Meanwhile, local leaders are pushing for stricter regulations on squatters in abandoned homes. Council Member Susan Zhuang is backing a bill that would require the FDNY and NYPD to track and report locations where squatters are staying.

There is no set timeline for the demolition yet.
