Four new Head Start centers are on track to open in The Bronx, with a location in Pelham Parkway scheduled to open this September.
"There is a dire need in every neighborhood for center-based early childhood education. That is a need we want to be responsive to," said Robert Cordero, the CEO of Grand Street Settlement.
The Manhattan and Brooklyn based nonprofit has been working to expand access to affordable child care for low-income families for 109 years. This is the first time they are expanding their services in The Bronx.
"The Bronx has the least number of center-based child care options for families in the entire city of New York. We are looking to change that," said Cordero.
The newest location on White Plains Road is on the ground floor of a new affordable housing building, where some families won't have to travel far to drop their kids off for child care services.
The facility has six classrooms that are outfitted with kid-safe restrooms, sinks and a fully equipped kitchen for mealtimes. It will have the capacity to serve 67 children from 2-4 years old.
"There are many families that will have priority to have their child in our child care center in their own building, it's also a resource for the whole Pelham Parkway community," said Cordero.
The second facility in Mount Eden is scheduled to open in October, while the other two located in Mott Haven and West Farms are planned for Jan. 2026. All four programs, once open, will be able to serve more than 450 children under 5 years old.
"We have a wrap-around approach, so not only are you going to receive education, but all families also receive a family advocate that will work on goals with the parent that supports their social, emotional as well as the child," said Carolina Capellan, the Bronx regional director of early childhood for Grand Street Settlement.
Grand Street Settlement is also looking to hire 116 staff members to fill teaching and staff positions at these locations.
"Different backgrounds, different education level, we want people from the Bronx who look like them and to serve them," said Capellan.
