A 1-year-old baby girl is in the hospital after police said she was punched multiple times in the face and head.
Police said officers responded to Union Avenue in Melrose for a 911 call on Thursday night and found the infant.
The child was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical but stable condition.
Police arrested and charged 19-year-old Jerome Thomas with two counts of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
As of Saturday night, it was not clear what the relationship is between Thomas and the child.
Investigators were back on scene Saturday afternoon, some of whom were seen carrying evidence bags from the apartment building.
“I saw the commotion on Thursday, but I didn’t know the details until today when I saw the cops and everyone,” said Nicole, a neighbor who only gave her first name. “That’s sad, I mean, that’s an innocent 1-year-old baby.”
“I have kids, so it sucks,” said Kevin, another neighbor who only gave a first name. “There were no sounds of altercations or violence or anything coming from down there that night, and I was here and was awake.”
Another neighbor told News 12 he constantly heard a man and woman fighting in the apartment.
News 12 went to the Melrose apartment to talk to the child’s family, but a handwritten note was on the door saying the tenant “took weeks away for a while and will not be home.”
