Patti Carone starts her day inside her kitchen made specifically for her shop, Fi-Dough Inc. She's making another batch of biscuits for man's best friend, or what she says is the only love money can buy.
"All our treats are made with organic ingredients, which are locally sourced," she said. "The day starts out when I pick a flavor and I get going on it. For example, if I make blueberry, that's the only treat that will be made that day."
A play on the term "fido," used to describe a dog's loyalty, the business began in 2005 when Carone’s daughter adopted a dog and started searching for healthier food options.
"She came to find out that a lot of the dog food [and] treats on the market were really not good for the dogs," Carone explained. "A lot of people don't understand that if you pick up a bag of treats, you need to read the ingredients. If there's something on the ingredient panel that you don't know what it is, you should not buy them."
Once they realized most dog treats contained questionable ingredients, Carone and her daughter took it upon themselves and made their own treats, paying tribute to their own family pups as a result.
"[My daughter] was in the bakery business, and she decided to formulate her recipes," said Carone. "She had them approved by the New York State Department of Agriculture, and here we are today. We also name all of our treats after family pets, past or present. Unfortunately, most of them have passed at this time, but they all have a story."
After years of helping her daughter perfect their recipes, Carone finally took over as the owner a few years ago. Looking back on the past two decades, she's thankful for the loyal customers she has made along the way, some of whom even date back to the first year.
"We used to go to shows where we would have one table. Now we have two to three tables," she said. "We have a lot more flavors, and we have a lot more customers. Their dogs love our products, and I love when someone comes to the booth and they say, 'Oh, we were looking for you. My dog just loves your treats.'"
Carone and the Fi-Dough Inc. team sell their treats at multiple locations throughout the Hudson Valley every weekend. On Saturdays, they alternate between making appearances at the Tash Farmers Market in Tarrytown and John Jay Homestead in Katonah. On Sundays, customers can find Fi-Dough at Muscoot Farms, as well as the Stormville Flea Market on holiday weekends.
For those who are unable to attend one of the markets, Fi-Dough Inc.'s products are available to buy on its website at any time.
