The Yonkers Police Department is offering ways to keep your packages safe this holiday season.
"You can have it delivered to your place of work if you're allowed to, or have it delivered to a family member maybe that works from home or delivered to a neighbor that you trust. That you know is home," said Lt. Kenneth Lacey, of the Yonkers Police Department.
This comes to light following a Nov. 23 incident where three suspects went into an apartment at 345 Bronx River Road in Yonkers and stole several packages.
The three suspects are facing charges, including petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
The term has been coined "porch pirates," synonymous for people who steal packages from someone's property.
Residents of Yonkers say they have mixed feelings on the issue.
Maureen Moore has opted out of online purchasing because she says with everything going on, she would rather go in-person to the store.
"I don't trust it, you know? You don't get the packages sometimes," said Ms. Moore.
Others residents say they rely on the accessibility and ease of virtual online shopping.
"It's very easy to shop online and its more convenient to shop online," said Yonkers resident John Mofus.
Lt. Lacey additionally advises people ordering to sign up for delivery alerts, use delivery lockers, and alert the police if you see suspicious behavior.
