One woman is dead and two men are fighting for their lives after a late-night house fire in Lindenhurst.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating the blaze at 8 Storz Place that started around 11:11 p.m. Thursday.
"I've lived in this neighborhood all my life," Lindenhurst neighbor Tommy Rittenhouse said. "I've lived right on the other corner. It's a shock. Terrible."
Police and first responders rushed into the home and pulled three people out of the burning building.
The Copiague Fire Department pronounced the woman dead at the scene. She has not been identified. Investigators said the Suffolk County Medical Examiner is working on an autopsy to determine her identity and cause of death.
Two men, who have also not been identified, were taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip and then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
Two First Precinct patrol officers were also taken to Good Samaritan to be treated for smoke inhalation but have since been released.
Officials said no one else was in the home during the fire and they reported no other injuries.
"There was a ton of smoke," Lindenhurst neighbor Todd Goodwin said. "The fire was coming out of the front windows, the front door. It was pretty crazy. It went up pretty quick."
The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be criminal at this time.
“I’m sad," Rittenhouse said. "I’ve known the lady all my life. I’ve known the kids all my life.”
This is the latest in a week of serious fires on Long Island where the cold and windy conditions may have played a role.
