A woman was critically injured in a shooting in Linden, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, leaving a neighborhood in shock.
"Nothing like this… It’s very quiet around here," said Robert Vandevere, who has lived in this Linden neighborhood for 15 years.
It’s still unclear what led to that shooting that left the victim critically injured and the suspect dead, but neighbors who spoke with News 12 said this one is a first.
"My wife told me that somebody had gotten shot and the person was running in between the houses and that the other person was in the house, shot," Vandevere said.
The call to police came in just after 10 a.m. Monday, with reports of a shooting on Carnegie Street near Monmouth Avenue. According to police, when they got to the scene, they found a woman on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound.
The person who allegedly shot her fled the scene and barricaded himself inside a nearby home.
"They seemed to be happy, so I don’t know what transpired," said a neighbor, who didn't want to be identified.
Police say once they were able to get inside the home, they found the suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
News 12 spoke with neighbors who said that this may have been a domestic incident.
One neighbor said the suspect was the victim’s boyfriend, and he lived in New York and would occasionally visit.
"I’ve seen them in the backyard. They usually have cookouts in the backyard. I would see them sitting on the front steps talking to each other," the neighbor said.
Several neighbors say the house the suspect barricaded himself inside of was the victim's home. They say his black Buick with New York plates was still parked outside.
"I’m surprised, I didn’t know that he had that in him. He didn’t look like the type of person, he looked quiet," the neighbor said.
The woman was taken to University Hospital in Newark and is listed in critical condition.
The names of the victim and the suspect were not immediately released.
Anyone who might have information about the incident is urged to call Detective Nicole Andrews at 908-474-8662.
