A Yonkers teen accused of setting off homemade explosives and damaging a porta-potty at Bergano Park is facing multiple charges, according to police.
Authorities say they responded to reports of fireworks being discharged near the park around 8 p.m. on Monday night. Upon arrival, no one was located and no fireworks were found.
Residents say they were left concerned after the loud explosion shook neighboring buildings. Police sent extra patrols to the area after the incident.
The Yonkers Police Department Intelligence Unit took the lead in the investigation after the portable toilet was discovered the next day.
Authorities determined that a local 14-year-old had constructed the explosives and arrested him at his home. A search of the residence uncovered more explosive-making materials.
Police say the boy confessed to constructing the device used in the park incident. He also admitted responsibility for several other explosions reported in recent weeks.
The charges against him include criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. Police say his case will be adjudicated by Westchester County Family Court.
