Hundreds of liquor, soda and coffee bottles line the walls inside Marcie Manfredonia's storefront, but it's not liquid that's inside of them; it’s a candle.
"[My family and I] have a construction company, and we used to pick up the old bottles from these restaurants," Manfredonia explained. "Instead of throwing them away, we thought it was a kind of cool idea to start cutting them, and we started making candles. I thought it was a cool idea because this way, we make all our own products. Any vessel, we pour candles into."
The idea of turning them into candles first began when Manfredonia and her family were looking for eco-friendly, non-toxic candles that they could actually burn in their home.
"All [of] my four sons have asthma, and so do I," she said. "Every time I would light [a candle], oh God. I was sneezing. I was coughing. It wasn't easy for me...So, all our products that we pour are all natural. We use coconut, apricot wax, we used soy wax. That's basically all the natural stuff that we do."
From there, they decided to open Custom Candle Co., with their signature bottles taking their "green" initiative to the next level. It's a concept that has won them the "Best of Westchester" award multiple times and gotten them to be the talk of the town for nearly a decade now.
"They love it," Manfredonia said. "They love coming in. They support us really well...It feels really nice. I didn't expect it when we first started, and I have a great team that helps out. I just love it."Sometimes, customers donate standard liquor, beer or soda bottles. On other days, Manfredonia's project might be much more sentimental."A friend of mine's daughter was getting married, and we took all the bottles from the rehearsal dinner," she explained. "We cut them and polished them, and on the back of the bottle, we put their song and their picture. We do QR codes, so you could scan the QR code and play the music from the wedding. That was the best one. So, they played the wedding music on the candle while it was burning, and the picture was on there, too."
Manfredonia also offers workshops and parties, both at the store and at a location of your choosing. Customers will be able to pick out their own bottle and learn how to make a candle themselves. Those events can be booked by calling the shop at (914) 218-8357 or emailing Info@CustomCandleco.com. Custom Candle Co. is located at 720 N Bedford Rd. in Bedford Hills. Anyone who donates a bottle to be recycled into a candle will get a discount on their next purchase at the shop.
