A Westchester firefighter is in the hospital after suffering a medical emergency following a response to a house fire in Port Chester Monday night.
Fire officials said crews were called around 5:30 p.m. at a home on Austin Place after reports of the smell of gas inside.
When firefighters entered the basement, they found heavy smoke and a fire burning within the walls.
Crews worked quickly to knock the fire down, the department said.
After the fire was extinguished, one firefighter suffered a medical emergency.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Fire officials said the firefighter is doing well.
It was not immediately clear whether the medical emergency was related to the incident.
The fire was deemed accidental.
