Parts of Route 1 are closed in Edison following a water main break on Monday morning.

Edison Township officials say that Route 1 North is shut down between Travers Avenue and Edmund Street. Parts of Route 1 South are also closed.

Mayor Sam Joshi says that the break happened around 9:30 a.m. The mayor says that a part of the roadway sank about 3 or 4 inches. Crews are on the scene making repairs.

“These are extremely frigid, very rough conditions. There's freezing water running through this. You're talking about hundreds and hundreds of gallons per minute that are coming out, and everyone is working very hard right now. Route 1 is just a sheet of ice over here,” the mayor says.

Officials say the repairs will last into Tuesday morning, but they hope to have it all cleaned up as soon as possible.
