HPAE Local 5089, the union that represents the nurses at University Hospital in Newark, has reached a tentative contract agreement with the hospital.
A spokesperson for the union says that details of the contract will be made public once members ratify the agreement in a vote on Oct. 11.
At the center of negotiations were nurse-to-patient ratios. The union was calling for a 5-to-1 patient-nurse ratio because they said nurses wouldn't be overworked, the quality of care would improve and staff wouldn’t leave.
