Two pedestrians were killed in separate crashes just hours apart this weekend in Brooklyn over the weekend. One driver stayed at the scene, while the other took off, leaving police searching for answers.
The most recent incident happened early Saturday morning on Withers Street in Williamsburg. Police say a 49-year-old man had dropped his food in the street around 4 a.m. and was bending down to pick it up when a Mack dump truck turned onto Withers Street and hit him. The driver did not stop.
The victim was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities are still searching for the truck and its driver.
Since the crash, an undercover officer has been spotted monitoring traffic in the area. Neighbors say large trucks frequently pass through the intersection, raising safety concerns.
"A lot of trucks come through the intersection at Woodpoint," said a neighbor named Rocky. "The traffic signals are kind of confusing, so I’m not surprised someone got hit here. Walking around, I feel like we have to be extra vigilant."
Just a few hours earlier, another fatal crash happened in Boerum Hill. Police say 45-year-old Trisha Chiriboga was in an SUV stopped at a red light on Flatbush Avenue. When she opened the back door to get out, a passing car struck her.
She was taken to the hospital but did not survive. In this case, the driver remained at the scene and no charges have been filed.
Back in Williamsburg, police are still looking for the dump truck involved in Saturday’s hit-and-run. Anyone with information is asked to call the police.
