NFL legend Tom Brady is bringing his trading card and collectible business to Brooklyn.
The new “CardVault by Tom Brady” store held its soft launch this week at 80 Flatbush Ave. in Downtown Brooklyn. It is the national retailer’s 13th location and its second in New York City.
The shop features a wide range of trading cards, from sports to Pokémon. Customer Guy Fox said the store taps into a childhood passion.
“I’m very excited about it,” Fox said. “It’s something I used to do as a child.”
Fox visited the store Thursday, hoping to sell his stack of sports cards. He said collectibles are more than just paper.
“These papers are worth something,” he said. “They’re almost a type of currency in itself.”
The NYPD said that in October, a man stole nearly $10,000 worth of merchandise from CardVault’s Manhattan location.
Chris Costa, co-founder and managing partner, said items can range from 50 cents to $500,000, and the company invests in security features including locked display cases.
“It’s part of the world that we live in, not just as a card shop but as a retailer,” Costa said. “When you operate in the world of retail, [shoplifting is] something that you have to plan for, prepare for; and luckily and thankfully, we’re both planned and prepped for both.”
The store’s official grand opening is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17.
