Rainy weather continues to soak Brooklyn Thursday morning, with roads across Sheepshead Bay and other coastal neighborhoods already slick as early commuters head out.
News 12’s Thunderbolt 12 is tracking conditions just after 5 a.m., showing puddles forming at intersections and low-lying spots along Emmons Avenue and Shore Parkway. The rain has been falling since Wednesday afternoon and is expected to continue into the evening.
The National Weather Service says 1 to 2 inches of rain are likely before the system moves out. While the rainfall is expected to stay light to moderate, a Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for Brooklyn from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. That means vulnerable areas near the shoreline could see up to a half-foot of water above ground level.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and use caution during the morning commute.
The rain comes as millions of Americans prepare to travel for Memorial Day weekend. According to AAA, Thursday afternoon will be one of the busiest travel periods on the roads, especially in and around the New York metro area.
