When purchasing Shakira tickets months ago, no one could have predicted the future setbacks just to get to the vicinity of MetLife Stadium.
Even before the midnight negotiation deadline with the rail engineers' union, New Jersey Transit made the decision to cut off all train and bus services to and from the Shakira concert for Thursday and Friday ahead of the potential rail strike.
“I heard them talking about this, could be one of the largest ones in what 40 years I thought I read. That’s gotta impact," Flemington resident and concertgoer Joe Lostumbo said.
NJ Transit apologized to concertgoers for any inconvenience in a statement but mentioned it must be done so all agency-wide customers can be at their final destinations by 11:59 p.m.
"We were originally hoping to use New Jersey Transit, kind of go-to way to get from the city out here to relatively middle of nowhere,” Hell's Kitchen concertgoer Brian Vinik said. "Fortunately, MetLife and Shakira were very communicative about alternate means of transportation with the Coach bus. But it was certainly not as smooth as New Jersey Transit would have been.”
“I feel bad for all the people who paid tickets and rely on public transportation to come here, but at the same time, as a union worker, I support the people who work for NJ Transit," attendee Nicole Alzamora said.
Shakira fan Randy Feliz is already feeling the bigger weight as a student at Montclair State University with family in the Bronx.
"Taking a Lyft to home is going to be very expensive, so I think I'm just going to have to stay back," Feliz said.
If choosing to use a rideshare service for Thursday or Friday's concert, expect delays and higher surge pricing.
Uber has sent a letter to MetLife and the Port Authority asking for more frequent PATH trains to and from Hoboken for the concert, as well as a dedicated shuttle bus service from Hoboken.
A Port Authority spokesperson has sent the following to News 12:
“As always, PATH will monitor stations, deploy police officers, and add service as necessary to address any unsafe crowding conditions. Planned overnight lane closures that typically begin as early as 9 p.m. at the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel and George Washington Bridge will be delayed until at least 1 a.m.to accommodate increased vehicular traffic following the Shakira concert. Staff will closely monitor traffic levels to ensure closures do not take place unless conditions are acceptable. While the Port Authority’s PATH commuter rail is part of a larger regional transportation network, we do not operate a bus transportation system similar to NJTRANSIT Bus nor do we have a fleet of readily available shuttle buses to serve tens of thousands of concertgoers at facilities that are miles away from the nearest Port Authority rail station.”
