Third victim found inside Norwood building days after explosion
The FDNY confirms that a third victim was found inside the apartment building in Norwood where an explosion and fire caused devastation on Wednesday. Crews located the person on Saturday afternoon.
Crews responded to the blaze at 374 E 209th St. just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, which quickly escalated into a fifth-alarm. Officials say at least an additional 14 people were hurt, including multiple firefighters. Dozens of residents were displaced.
According to the FDNY, firefighters were inside the building when portions of the second and third floors collapsed. Those crews were forced to leave the premises temporarily before re-entering to continue battling the fire.
News 12 reported the first death the day of the fire and the second on Friday. The three victims' identities have not been released to the public.
At the scene of the tragedy, multiple residents told News 12 they had been complaining about possible gas leaks for weeks, but say no action was taken.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
