A jewelry shop owner in Monmouth County is still trying to add up the losses after a brazen burglary early Thursday morning. The entire incident was caught on security video.
Thieves busted through the front glass door with sledgehammers to David Mugrabi’s jewelry business on Norwood Avenue on the border of Deal and Ocean Township.
“You never think it’s going to hit home. You secure the place, you feel violated, of course,” said Mugrabi.
Just before 3 a.m. Thursday, a pair of thieves pulled up, smashed their way inside, jumped over the counter, and took everything out of the display case closest to the front window.
The alarm alerted Mugrabi that something was very wrong.
“I got here at 3:05 a.m. and the police were already here. They came to search the premises to make sure everything is secure,” he said.
The thieves then left as quickly as they arrived. From start to finish, it took them about two minutes to make off with a still-to-be-determined amount of jewelry.
“We need to make sure this stops. It’s people’s lives. It’s a livelihood. I hope it doesn’t happen to anybody else. It's not only for me. Listen, it happened. We're safe, secure, that’s the main thing. We don’t want anyone to get hurt, which is the most important thing,” said Mugrabi.
Police from Ocean Township and Deal responded to the call. Ocean Township police are leading the investigation.
“Money comes, money goes, there’s nothing we can do about it. It’s life,” said Mugrabi.
Ocean Township police are asking anyone who recognizes the thieves or their vehicle to give them a call.
