At the MLK Day of Service at Sid Jacobson JCC in East Hills, families donated food and clothing to pantries on Long Island, and kids learned a few lessons about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"The lesson of giving back is important to teach children so as they get older, they can continue the tradition and continue with the ideals that we are instilling in them,” said Alyssa Schimel, board member of Sid Jacobson JCC.

In Plainview, there was an event held to help new moms and dads, providing them with all the essentials needed to take care of a newborn baby. Organizers of the event say that this honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy through acts of kindness.

"We look to see if we were a new parent what would we need for our child and try to make a difference in their lives in starting out,” said Gail Warrack, with the Mid-Island Y JCC.

A total of 75 families went home with car seats, strollers, diapers, baby wipes, formula, bottles and clothing at the third annual Baby Blessing event at the Mid-Island Y JCC. Volunteers of all ages helped.
