If you are decking your halls this holiday season, the tree is probably the staple you're preparing to do some spending on.
Marshal Cohen is a chief retail advisor at Circana and has noticed the price change over time.
"Christmas trees have gotten very expensive this year," said Cohen "Some people are spending an average of $80 a tree when it used to be only $50"
In 2024 several factors are not helping with that cost. The drought and local fires could have an effect on both supply and cost.
"That is going to cause and offer the opportunity for the sellers to raise price," said Cohen.
If you are looking for something more sustainable, there is always the option of a fake tree.
"Fake trees can cost up to, you know, between $250 to $1,000, but they last a long time, and they get your money's worth," said Cohen.
Be it real or fake, once that tree is up, it is time to deck it out. According to Cohen if it is a family's first tree, some will spend up to $350 on the lights, ornaments and topper. After that, he says the average is $75 on yearly upgrades to your collection.
Whatever you decide to do with yours it is clear this year's tree may have us branching out our budget more than in Christmas past.
