The Norwalk Fire Department rescued a swan frozen in the icy waters of the Norwalk River Tuesday morning.

Firefighters entered the river to reach the swan and brought it to the shore. Norwalk Hospital EMS transported the swan to the VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center for evaluation and additional care.

"We used some warm water in order to slowly get the blocks of ice off of the swan and actively heat the swan up. Luckily, I didn't find any major wounds on the swan," said Dr. Melissa Salgado, a veterinary criticalist at the VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center.

Jonathan Maggio, deputy chief of the Norwalk Fire Department, was first on scene after the call came in. He believes that the swan could have been trapped in the ice for days. When he realized the swan was alive, Maggio said he was happy.

"It didn't look promising when I first got here, but we did see some movement. And certainly, when my guys got down on the scene, I think the swan knew that we were there to help it," he said.

The firefighters who worked in the water to save the swan said they train for these situations frequently.

After it was evaluated, the swan was taken to the Norwalk Veterinary Hospital by Tailors Wildlife Rescue Group. It could fully recover in as little as one week.
