A man was killed in Jersey City in an exchange of gunfire with a police officer late Monday night near Ege and Bergen avenues.
Members of the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit say they saw the man acting suspiciously and noticed a bulge in his clothing that appeared to be a possible firearm.
When officers approached, the man opened fire on a JCPD officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect, according to officials.
The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Family members at the scene identified the man as 27-year-old Teshaun Rogers.
“They shot him down in the street. They killed him...and not telling me what happened,” his grandmother told News 12.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop confirmed the Street Crimes Unit was involved and said the suspect fired first.
As standard protocol, the investigation is now being handled by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.
