Almost 30% of all cars stolen this year have been Hondas, according to police.
Richard Pappas, owner of Sound and Design Auto Spa, says people are driving off with the car without breaking in.
"They get stolen, brand-new stolen, within minutes of it being parked. They are actually using a lot of what they call repeater devices to clone the keys ," said Pappas.
He tells News 12 Hondas have a higher resale value, so they are more appealing to thieves, but any car with a push to start can fall victim to this kind of theft.
"Once they duplicate that code. Now, I can go ahead and go over to the vehicle and start the car, unlock the doors and all I need to do is be in the vicinity," said Pappas.
He says to protect your car after market security systems are best to pick up if your car is being messed with.
"The ability to do a remote start, ability to have a tilt sensor. It's going to have an impact sensor impact sensor. Somebody's actually trying to break the windows, trying to hit the vehicle, you know, so pick that up," said Pappas.
These car security systems have added alarms and record while you are not in the car.
Louis Rodriguez installed his car camera after he heard about eight Hondas being broken into on his block on Merry Avenue.
"Before the accident, I didn't have a camera on the side but now I have it," said Louis Rodriguez, of Pelham Bay.
Pappas says adding an extra security system won't guarantee a safe car buy it does makes your car less of a target.
"So, can I stop somebody? If I put a $1,000 alarm in there and stop them from breaking into my car, the answer is no. But I can really stop them from driving away with it," said Pappas.
News 12 reached out to Honda for a statement and they said they are aware of the thieves tactics and they are working to improve security features to their vehicles regularly.
