Animal activists are calling for Sportsman’s Kennels in Manorville to shut down, citing poor conditions that were allegedly uncovered during a two-month undercover investigation by a nonprofit organization.
Humane World for Animals says its investigation found more than 200 dogs living in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions at the breeding facility. The organization alleges some dogs were suffering from kennel cough, untreated injuries and ear infections, while bugs and roaches were found in areas where the animals were housed.
A spokesperson for Sportsman’s Kennels disputes those claims, saying the facility recently passed multiple inspections.
“Three separate inspections were conducted recently by leading animal government safety agencies,” said Sylvia King-Cohen, the spokesperson for the kennel. “These were independent inspections, not chosen by us, not influenced by us. Every one of them found no violations.”
News 12 was allowed inside one of the rooms at the kennel, where several puppies were seen housed together in plastic bins with toys and beds. The conditions appeared significantly cleaner than what was shown in the undercover footage released by Humane World for Animals.
King-Cohen also said the kennel’s owner has been receiving death threats and claimed it was the responsibility of the undercover investigator, who was employed at the facility, to help maintain cleanliness.
Humane Long Island Executive Director John Di Leonardo says if that was the case, the employee should've been fired.
“Her job was not to clean up the mess here and make it look like this place is a good place," Di Leonardo said. "Her job is to expose the horrific conditions that she walked in on and that these dogs have endured years and years at this facility.”
Former customer Nadine Lauria says she purchased her dog from Sportsman’s Kennels in 2019 and believes the animal’s health problems stem from its early care.
“She has gastrointestinal issues due to how she was raised by the breeder,” Lauria said. “Her stool was explosive. It smelled horrible. I knew something wasn’t right, and I took her to the vet the night I got her. It took four or five times to clear her up.”
News 12 reached out to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office to ask whether an investigation is underway. The office declined to confirm or deny any investigation.
