New York State Police issued more than 11,000 tickets during a statewide Labor Day enforcement campaign aimed at cracking down on impaired and dangerous driving.

The special enforcement period ran from Sept. 4 through Sept. 7 and included sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols and increased enforcement targeting distracted and aggressive drivers.

State Police said troopers issued a total of 11,201 tickets during the operation.

Authorities also arrested 253 people for driving while intoxicated.

Troopers investigated 632 crashes during the holiday weekend, including five fatal crashes.

Speeding was the most common violation, with 3,935 tickets issued statewide.

Police also issued 308 distracted driving tickets, 746 seat belt violations and 234 Move Over Law violations.

State police noted the enforcement effort resulted in more tickets and DWI arrests than last year's Labor Day campaign, when troopers issued 9,912 tickets and made 225 DWI arrests.
