A man who police say was wanted for murder was fatally shot in Woodbury following an hourslong manhunt, according to an official source.
Police attempted to take Ali into custody near Trout Brook Road, according to state police.
Authorities say Ali, escaped into a wooded area off the Thruway after a police pursuit and fiery crash in a stolen vehicle this morning.
“We were stuck in traffic, and it was a little crazy,” says Linda Gioia.
The 28-year-old was believed to be armed and dangerous.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies set up a staging area on Smith Clove Road in Central Valley during the search. Police were seen canvassing area neighborhoods in Highland Mills on Pine Hill Road, Skyline Drive and Highland Drive.
“It’s crazy. A lot of police agencies around. I hope they catch the guy,” said Frank Stevenson during the manhunt.
Authorities had urged residents to shelter in place during the search. Several Monroe-Woodbury schools were on lockout during the search, including Monroe-Woodbury High School, Monroe-Woodbury Middle School, Central Valley Elementary and Smith Clove Elementary.
Ali was seen on a trail camera near Maplewood Drive in Highland Mills at approximately 12:35 p.m., according to police, not far from where he was located more than an hour later.
