A 46-year-old Rockland County man died after being found shot inside his vehicle on the outbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge Tuesday evening, triggering a major police investigation and severe traffic delays during the evening commute.
Authorities said the incident happened around 7:18 p.m. Officers responding to what was initially reported as a one-car crash discovered the driver unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the rear right shoulder.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
News 12 sources say the victim was a Valley Cottage resident and Con Edison employee, and the shooting may have stemmed from a road rage incident.
In a statement, Con Edison said, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him.”
The man's identity is being withheld pending notification of family members. Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect.
The investigation has concluded, and the George Washington Bridge has been cleared and reopened to traffic.
