Sewanhaka Central Schools District is moving forward to allow sporting events to continue against Bellmore-Merrick Central schools.

The decision came Tuesday after some parents called for an end to games against the other Nassau district.

"The Sewanhaka Central School District will continue to compete against the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District as well as all other schools in the county,” Sewanhaka Central School District Superintendent Regina Agrusa.

Agrusa added she believes the decision is in the best interest of the student-athletes.

Parents last month held a meeting raising concerns over what they said were racist incidents during games against Bellmore-Merrick schools. Those include a fight last month during a girls’ basketball game, and in 2021 when Mepham High School students allegedly taunted black Elmont players with bananas.

Board members say they could start a committee to protect their students from future incidents.
