Memorial Day is almost here, and local officials are putting rules in place at the Jersey Shore.
In Seaside Heights, local restrictions will impact kids and young adults.
The borough is setting a curfew and told News 12 it is prepared to enforce it this weekend.
"We've instituted it, and we know it works," said Seaside Heights Borough Mayor Tony Vaz.
The local police department, the prosecutor's office, the sheriff's office, New Jersey State Police and the FBI will make for a strong law enforcement area, said the mayor.
Anyone under the age of 18 is banned from the street and the boardwalk from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, with exceptions.
The mayor shared that any person working on the boardwalk can continue to come home later, or if people are with their parents or guardians, it's not a problem.
The mayor shared that last year, on Memorial Day weekend, there was a moment of panic on the boardwalk.
"Someone yelled on the boardwalk, 'Shots fired.' That caused a rampage of people running off the boardwalk," said Vaz.
The mayor said the police investigation showed no shots were fired. They said it could have possibly been a firecracker or a car backfire.
News 12 spoke with a local business owner about the curfew ahead of the holiday.
"It's not that big of a deal, I wish it was an hour later, but it's still good, we close up pretty much midnight, so it gets me out of here earlier," said Danny Merk, with The Shore Store.
"I'm worried about the weather," said Merk. "The weather is what changes things around here, but curfew, the kids are going to come, kids will always come to Seaside Heights."
While he wishes the curfew was at 11 p.m., Merk said he understands what officials are trying to do.
"The town is trying something, and I'm going with whatever they're trying because it's working," said Merk.
The curfew isn't the only rule in place — from April 15 to June 30 each year, no short-term rental can be rented to any person under 21 years of age. The mayor says it is a preventative measure.
"We want to have a reputation of 'best destination area' that people feel safe when they come from seaside heights," said Vaz.
He said they are not playing games.
"We will enforce the rules, don't abide by the rules, there will be a consequence," said Vaz.
