A total of 1.7 million dozen brown organic and brown cage-free eggs distributed by August Egg company are being recalled.
According to the FDA, people living in New Jersey have gotten salmonella due to consuming contaminated eggs. Nationwide, 79 people have gotten ill, and 21 were hospitalized.
"Well, it’s shocking. It’s not good. Especially with the way things are today," said Joshua Reed, Asbury Park. "It’s hard enough finding good value in prices. And then on top of that, you have this now. It’s alarming."
According to the FDA, the eggs were distributed between Feb. 3 and May 6 to Walmart stores in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois. The FDA and August Egg Company are tracking all distributions and, as of press time, did not have an update on whether the eggs were distributed elsewhere.
"I actually didn’t hear anything about it until recently. So now we have to be more cautious when buying eggs for breakfast," said Ivan Collazo, of Neptune.
No deaths have been reported at this time.
"I mean that’s just crazy," said Tracy Kane, of Eatontown. "I feel like nowadays it’s nothing new. Everything has an outbreak on it lately. You just have to be aware and watch where you’re shopping."
The eggs, which are packed in fiber or plastic cartons, have been pulled from shelves. However, shoppers should check their fridge for any eggs that have a Julian date between 32 and 126, along with a plant code number of P-6562 or CA-5330.
"You just have to keep your head on a swivel and make sure you pay attention to what’s going on out there and be cautious when you’re purchasing things," said Reed.
