A section of Highway 18 in East Brunswick, New Jersey, is closed in both directions Thursday morning because of a crash that brought down utility poles and wires.
The closure is along Route 18 at Rues Lane, where snapped power poles and wires are draped across all lanes of the highway. Another pole is down on the northbound side, with debris scattered on the roadway.
Utility crews were working on the wires Thursday morning. PSE&G reported about 15 customers without power.
East Brunswick police sent out an alert at 11:19 p.m. Wednesday saying Route 18 was closed between Rues Lane and Main Street because of a motor vehicle crash involving a downed utility pole and wires, police said.
No estimated time for reopening was provided in that alert.
The vehicle or vehicles involved were no longer at the scene Thursday morning. Wires remained down as repair work continued.
Traffic is backed up in both directions near the Route 18 Shopping Center and Brunswick Square Mall, with long delays reported.
The following detours will be in place until further notice:
Route 18 southbound Detour:
  • Motorists on Route 18 southbound will be directed to take the ramp to Rues Lane
  • Turn left onto Rues Lane
  • Cross over Route 18 and turn right onto Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527
  • Turn right onto Main Street/CR 615
  • Cross under Route 18 and turn right to take the ramp back to Route 18 southbound
Or
  • Motorists on Route 18 southbound will be directed to take the ramp to Rues Lane
  • Turn right onto Rues Lane
  • Turn left onto Summerhill Road/CR 613 southbound
  • Turn left onto Main Street/CR 615
  • Turn left to take the ramp to Route 18 southbound
Route 18 northbound Detour
  • Motorists on Route 18 northbound will be directed to take the ramp to CR 527 north/ Main Street/Spotswood
  • Turn left onto Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527
  • Turn left onto Rues Lane
  • Turn right onto Route 18 northbound
