Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials said no evacuations have been ordered at this time.
Residents within a half-mile of Route 32 and Stafford Road, between Route 275 and Route 44, were told to shelter in place, officials said.
Officials said the train was carrying propane, lumber, grain and grease. No leak has been reported, but crews said rail cars will need to be placed upright, and residents should remain indoors in case a leak occurs during that process.
Route 32 and Stafford Road are closed between Route 275 and Route 44. Residents were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes, with officials saying the closure is expected to be prolonged.
School leaders said they are working with bus companies to arrange alternate routes and will notify families.
Authorities said the situation remains active and more information will be released as it becomes available.
