A Yonkers police officer is being praised for his role capturing an armed suspect during his first tour of duty in field training.

The Yonkers Police Department says PO Morton, his field training officer and her partner responded to reports of a woman causing a disturbance.

Witnesses told police that the woman was taunting and chasing people on the street while pointing a gun at them.

Authorities say the officers found the illegal firearm in the woman’s purse after arriving at the scene.

The suspect, now identified as Tiana Reid, was safely taken into custody and charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The Yonkers Police Department says PO Morton graduated from the academy just weeks ago.

In a post on Facebook, they thanked him and the other officers for their professionalism and teamwork.

“Whether it's a veteran with decades of experience or a rookie on day one, every member plays a role in keeping Yonkers safe,” read the post.
