Residents of the Amalgamated Housing in Kingsbridge say a growing rat problem has made them afraid to leave their homes. They are pointing to a neighboring apartment building as the source of the infestation.

Neighbors who live near 3991 Saxon Ave. gathered with local officials to call attention to what they describe as an escalating rodent problem that began after tenants moved into the newly built rent-stabilized apartment building.

"Rats everywhere. Everywhere. And garbage. Garbage," said resident Mrs. Chukwukere.

Residents allege that trash left outside the building has attracted rodents to the area. They also claim gaps between the building and the ground created during construction have become entry points and nesting areas for rats.

Neighbors held a press conference this week, saying the infestation has grown so severe that some residents are afraid to walk in and out of their homes.

"We are afraid. We're actually afraid of coming in and out of our homes," one resident said. "The rats are becoming more aggressive and bold, as you've seen this morning."

During a visit to the area, rats could be seen entering and exiting holes along the base of the building. Numerous rat traps, some containing dead rodents, were also visible near the property.

Longtime residents say they have never seen conditions this bad.

"This is really a significant problem," another resident said. "I've lived here 40 years. Never, never. With the erection of this building, it has changed the entire community and we want it changed back."

Residents say they want immediate action to address the infestation and restore safe and sanitary conditions to the neighborhood.

News 12 reached out to the building's management for comment and is waiting to hear back.
