FDNY is still looking into why flames erupted at a new building on East Gun Hill Road on Saturday, but tenants say they've been left to deal with the aftermath on their own.
Residents showed our crews water damage and other repairs they are still waiting for like exposed wiring, broken intercoms, water leaks, and power outages. They told us that they had not received communication from management with one tenant saying she was away when the fire started and got no notice from the building that the fire had even occurred.
In November 2024, News 12 reported on the new building after complaints from neighbors and Community Board 12 that units would be set aside for shelter use rather than strictly as affordable housing through the city’s housing lottery, Housing Connect.
The shelter units are run by the Acacia Network, which residents said leads to a lot of confusion in times like this when they need help but can’t get in touch with their own management.
The Department Of Housing Preservation And Development (HPD) said it sent a special enforcement team to the building yesterday and will let News 12 know what they find. Building management has not yet responded to News 12's inquiry.
