The remains of a Sullivan County woman who disappeared in 2017 have been found, bringing closure to her family after nearly eight years.
Hope Alive 845 — a nonprofit that helps find missing people — confirmed to News 12 that the remains of 31-year-old Shaniece Harris were recovered several months ago by the FBI in Wurtsboro. The group says her remains were only recently released to the family, allowing them to hold a funeral Tuesday at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home in Middletown.
Harris vanished in 2017, sparking a years-long search. Earlier this year, a Monticello man was indicted by federal authorities for her murder, bringing some long-awaited closure to Harris' devastated family and loved ones.
Hope Alive 845 founder Domingo Ramos called the discovery bittersweet, saying he is relieved Harris’ family can finally have closure.
The FBI has not released additional details about the discovery, citing the ongoing government shutdown.
