Passaic County officials are investigating a rat infestation at a property just outside of Greenwood Lake, in the Hewitt section of West Milford, New Jersey.
The home, located on Lake Shore Drive, is currently occupied by a squatter, according to county officials. Health officials say the infestation has been ongoing and that the county and local agencies are coordinating efforts to eliminate the problem.
When News 12 visited the neighborhood Monday afternoon, county officials and police were seen outside the home assisting the person living there.
A neighbor showed News 12 several videos taken on a cellphone that appear to show dozens of rats scurrying around the property.
A spokesperson for the Passaic County Health Department said an exterminator began servicing the property last week and will continue treatments weekly for the next three weeks before reassessing the situation.
Officials say they’re also working directly with the occupant to provide social service assistance and relocation support, while pursuing a long-term plan to prevent future infestations.
Residents in the surrounding neighborhood are being advised to seal entry points, remove food sources, and contact licensed exterminators if they notice signs of rodent activity.
The county has also provided resources and prevention tips for neighbors who may be affected by the infestation.
