The York Street Station in Dumbo is a hotspot for commuters and tourists because the station is a walk from views of the Brooklyn Bridge.
But commuters like Lenox Remsay say he's growing frustrated with the station's layout.
“I was literally coming up the stairs thinking this is ridiculous. I come here every day. There's no other way to get up here. No elevator," said Remsay.
He's not the only one. Dalia Matos says having one exit isn't just inconvenient, it's a safety concern.
"In New York City, God forbid anything were to happen, we have nowhere to escape to," said Matos.
For commuter Jeff Sherman - who happens to be an architect - those concerns sparked a bigger idea.
“It was things where we kept thinking, 'Oh, this is terrible, someone's going to fix this.' And then years went by and we're like, 'Oh, maybe we're the ones who are going to fix it,'" said Sherman.
Years ago, Sherman made a petition with a plan that included things like making the station easier to find, making it accessible with an elevator and fixing the problem of only having one exit. His design would have the entrance exit out into a nearby park, not only making tourist attractions more accessible but also helping with the flow of people.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous about how packed it will be and how we're like, packed in like sardines, trying to get to the exit or people waiting for a train to come," said Matos.
In 2022, the MTA conducted a feasibility study that included things like adding a second entrance at the station. News 12 reached out to see if there were any updates since then or any different plans to address the concerns.
A spokesperson responded with the following statement: “We are committed to delivering the best possible customer experience at York St F station as we continue to monitor ridership patterns and feedback from riders.”
