Reports of an armed person on the Ramapo College campus in Mahwah were determined to be “unfounded,” according to Mahwah police.

Mahwah police said the campus was placed on lockdown just before 6 p.m. Thursday after Ramapo College Public Safety officers received a report that a woman was heard screaming, “He has a gun,” near the Berrie Center.

An emergency alert sent to students told everyone on campus to seek shelter indoors and lock or barricade doors. Those not on campus were urged to stay away.

Mahwah police officers searched campus buildings for a potential gunman but determined the report appeared to be a false alarm.

The lockdown was lifted around 8 p.m.

"The safety and security of our campus community is our absolute highest priority," Ramapo College President Cindy R. Jebb wrote in a statement. "We are incredibly grateful for the rapid, decisive action of our Public Safety, the Mahwah, Ramsey, and Upper Saddle River Police Departments, first responders, and the cooperation of our campus community during this incident."

The school will resume normal operations Friday. Security will remain increased as a precaution.
