Food insecurity is a growing problem on Long Island, but Long Island nonprofits are trying to address it, one food drive at a time.

Today, PSEG Long Island will host its second Power to Feed food drive of the summer. Overall, it's the sixth year they've held the event, which benefits Island Harvest.

Long Islanders have donated the equivalent of nearly 153,000 meals through the initiative since the beginning.

The event comes during the summer months, when there is historically a significant reduction in food donations to local banks and pantries. This is also when kids are on summer break, therefore not receiving free or reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches through their schools.

Earlier this year, several Long Island Food Banks said they needed extra support and requested an additional $150 million in state aid.

Today's event also comes just weeks after thousands of Long Islanders may have lost access to SNAP because of the new federal work requirements that impacted benefits on June 1.

Today's donation event is taking place at the Stop & Shop at 260 Pond Path in South Setauket from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
