As children gathered for dismissal outside of PS202's playground, frustrated parents and teachers were gathered on the other side of the fence, calling for the Department of Education to reverse their decision to remove Principal Chauntae Brown from the role of Interim Principal in lieu of another candidate. Brown had served in the role for nearly eight months, and before that for two years as an assistant principal for the district. Parents led chants of "Bring Back Mrs. Brown," as they say the switch-up comes just before kids are set to take their standardized tests. "Mrs. Brown, to know her is to lover her. Kids only come to school for her, parents come to see her," said parent Mayah Alcivar. Other parents told News 12 they were considering opting their special needs children out of standardized tests, but it was Mrs. Brown who convinced them to reconsider. "My daughter she is already crying, saying she cannot see Mrs. Brown," said parent Janelle Brutton. NYC Council member Chris Banks, who spoke at the rally, has also called for an investigation into the DOE process for selection of the candidates. News 12 reached out to DOE on the status of the role, what role Brown may have in the future, as well as their reasoning for the decision and is waiting for a response.
