Schools across the island are making adjustments to ensure that students stay cool and safe when taking state exams during the sweltering heat.
Walt Whitman High School Principal John Murphy, like many school administrators across the island, made some changes to the testing locations to ensure students are in air conditioning while taking the state exams - like those preparing for the algebra regents Wednesday.
New York state regents requires the exams to be taken on a specific date and time.
Principal Murphy says they are proactive and monitor weather reports to make adjustments where necessary.
Meanwhile, Central Islip Superintendent Sharon Dungee made the determination to have half days for students this week in light of the smothering heat.
They also gave out water, used air-conditioned rooms as cooling centers for the children to rotate into -and perhaps the sweetest way they beat the heat may have been the free ice cream for students, bus drivers and staff.
