A Bergen County business owner is recovering after being shot in the face with a crossbow, according to officials.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says 53-year-old Raymond Carey, of Hasbrouck Heights, faces attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting the owner of Birds By Joe 2 in the face with a crossbow.
It happened just before 6 p.m. Monday at the exotic bird store on Route 46 in Saddle Brook.
Authorities say Carey walked into the store and shot at the owner. She was able to disarm him — but Carey was able to get away in a car before police arrived at the scene. The owner recognized Carey as a previous customer.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and Saddle Brook police teamed up with other law enforcement agencies — including the FBI - and tracked Carey down in Pine Beach, Ocean County, arresting him just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Victor Jaramillo, who owns the print shop next door, told News 12, “Yesterday was something that was completely shocking. I got the call, and my phone was going off like crazy like ‘Hey Vic are you OK?' There's been a lot of odd things happening over the last couple months. We just kind of have to be on the lookout."
This incident also comes shortly after a
$7,000 parrot was stolen from this same store. The parrot was safely returned, but police continue to search for the person responsible in that case.
It is not clear if the two incidents were related.
Birds By Joe 2 has been temporarily closed since Monday evening. The store made a post to
their social media Tuesday evening saying the owner is OK.
